Plants with a Purpose
Most of the products sold by
are found in the form of hay or straw.
In the case of hay, the crop is grown for the purpose of producing animal feed. Therefore, the plant is harvested (cut) at a point in it's maturity when it has grown strong and healthy. At this stage, the plant contains a high amount of nutritional value for the animal, and also, because of it's size, provides a high yield for the farmer. Hay typically provides good roughage value and higher protein.
Timothy Hay: Phleum pratense
Timothy is a perennial (annual) grass which is primarily grown as animal feed. Timothy contains a good combination of protein and roughage, and therefore, is an excellent forage product. The primary growing area for Timothy on the west coast of the United States in Central Washington (Ellensburg). Timothy Hay is used in the racehorse industry as well as the dairy industry and is considered to be a premium product.
Sudan Hay: Sorghum sudanense
Sudan is an annual which is grown primarily in the desert southwest. It has also been grown successfully in other, cooler climates
including Washington and Oregon. As an annual, Sudan is planted each year and typically yields one or two harvests. Sudan grass is
a member of the same family as sorghum, and has a high fiber content which makes it an excellent source of roughage.
is the only exporter of Sudan grass to offer True-Sweet™
Sudan, a low nitrate, sweeter variety than traditional Sudan.
Oat Hay: Helictotrichon sempervirens
Oats are an annual crop which is grown primarily for the grain. Oat straw is harvested after the grain harvest. Oat hay is also grown and is a good quality feed. Oat hay provides a relatively high protein content and is also a reasonably good roughage product.
Bermuda Hay: Cynodon dactylon
Bermuda is a perennial grass which is grown in warmer, drier climates. It is grown for both seed and hay. As a hay, it provides a moderate amount of protein and a good amount of roughage. Since it is fine stemmed and soft, it is easily fed, and in some very hot climates, it is preferred by the cow over other feeds. Bermuda straw is purchased in large quantities as a roughage product.
Hay Cubes
Hay cubes are a processed form of our basic forage products. In this form, the product can be easily handled by the end-user and others in the distribution channel. Because cubes are approximately the size of a golf ball, they lack some of the benefit that is derived from longer fiber length.
Grains and Other Feeds
In addition to forage products,
markets an array of feed products from other
sources. These include whole cotton seed, beet pulp pellets, soy bean meal, barley, corn, corn meal, oats, canola seed, various mixed
grain, and compound feeds. These products are acquired through long-term agreements and spot purchases from assorted grain suppliers
and feed mills.
